Once considered taboo, and often unmentioned, homosexuality in sports has been a hot topic as of late. Last week, New York Rangers forward Sean Avery received criticism from some after he publically acknowledged his support for gay marriage. This weekend Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts publically came out, telling the New York Times that he is gay.
There has long been a thought that homosexuality would not be accepted in a sporting world known for its jocks who often jockey to see who is considered the toughest. Things appear to be changing, however, as homosexuality is becoming more accepted in every facet of everyday life, including professional athletics.
Today, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth posted a series of tweets announcing his support for homosexual rights, as well as the legalization of same-sex marriage.
DonteStallworth: Sad that people are ridiculed for their sexual orientation in this age... and leave religion out of this, God loves ALL!!!#hyporcrites
DonteStallworth: These politicians that use religion to deter gay marriage are same ones doing dirty under the table ish & war mongering #WheresYourReligion
DonteStallworth: Wanda Sykes: "If you don't believe in same sex marriage, don't marry the same sex." #EnoughSaid
